William Shortpaws orders him to get the business in order or (gasp!) he will once again take over --- and Geronimo will be out of a job. For the next week, Geronimo works so hard he doesn't even take a break for lunch. On Christmas Eve morning, Geronimo realizes he needs to be at his nephew Benjamin's Christmas play. But when he arrives, he is too late. The play is over and Benjamin's feelings are hurt. Geronimo's friends want to go out for lunch and open gifts, but Geronimo just doesn't have time because he must work. He even turns down his crush, Petunia Pretty Paws, when she invites him to go to Australia with her. And when his co-workers try to throw a party, he yells at them.

It announces the wedding of his cousin, Stevie Stingysnout, which will be held at the family home, known as "Penny Pincher Castle" on "Cheap Change Hill." He can't believe it when Thea insists they attend. She doesn't even give him time to pack properly, but Geronimo comes along when he finds out that Benjamin is going.

When they arrive at Uncle Samuel S. Stingysnout's crazy castle, it's in the middle of nowhere --- and built out of all kinds of materials, even aluminum cans. In order to get in the castle, they must travel across the stinky moat in an old patched inner tube. Geronimo is appalled by his uncle's home and is amazed that his uncle loves it so much. He regrets going on the trip with his entire heart, especially after Trap tricks him into taking off his pants in front of a bunch of guests.

Because of Uncle Samuel's thrifty ways, the room Geronimo stays in is really poor and depressing. It holds a fireplace with pretend flames and a book that you can't open. Can things get any worse? Yes, as a matter of fact. When Geronimo needs the bathroom, he must ask his uncle for the key. Uncle Samuel can't hear very well and Geronimo can't wait. He's so impatient that he makes a fuss. Now the guests think Geronimo is a mouse who takes his pants off in public and is rude to his uncle. And that is not the end of his humiliation --- all because of prankster Trap.

Geronimo is amazed when the bride, Patience Plainpaws, begins to serve dinner wearing a maid's uniform. Geronimo overhears visitors discussing the fact that Patience was once wealthy but has since lost her fortune. Dinner itself is shocking because there is so little of it, and the castle is freezing. Is there any way this wacky wedding trip can have a happy ending worthy of a Geronimo Stilton book? You might be surprised…then again, you might not be!

Geronimo's crush, television reporter Petunia Pretty Paws, and her brother Wolfie persuade Geronimo to travel with them to Australia where they will work on a documentary to protect the land and animals. Unfortunately (gulp!) they mention upfront that there may be bungee jumping and skydiving in afraid-to-fly Geronimo's immediate future.

Before they leave, Petunia and Wolfie outfit Geronimo with contact lenses (since you can't bungee jump or skydive in glasses). The contacts come in handy as soon as Geronimo and his friends land in Sydney, Australia, where Wolfie insists Geronimo go surfing with him! He actually survives (and enjoys) hanging ten, which encourages him to dive right into his next athletic aquatic adventure: swimming with dolphins.

When the three adventurers drive through Australia's desert, Aborigines Wangara and Wani travel with them. As they ride through the bush, the travelers see exotic plants and birds. Geronimo gets kicked by a kangaroo and punctured by an echidna, an animal with sharp quills. A giant bird called an emu attacks him, and he gets up close and personal with an incredibly poisonous snake. But that is just the beginning of Geronimo's trials. Soon he finds himself alone and lost in the huge Australian outback. Does Geronimo have what it takes to survive on his own?

In DOWN AND OUT DOWN UNDER, we not only get to enjoy Geronimo's outback adventures but also learn all about jet lag and why people need glasses, as well as many fascinating facts about the continent of Australia.

Trap found the ancient treasure map in the trunk of Wandering Wally, their ancestor. He discovers that his wallet is in his suitcase…and he has the wrong suitcase! He accidentally grabbed an identical bag belonging to someone else at the airport. Geronimo doesn't have money or his cell phone, but he does discover a tag on the bag that reads "Mrs. A. Smith." He panics. Smith must be the most common name in the world! How will he ever find the bag's owner and trade her for his own suitcase?

We all know Geronimo's sister, Thea, who (unlike her brother) is up for any wild adventure any time. Thea works as a journalist at Geronimo's newspaper. One evening, when she arrives home, the mailmouse hands over a special delivery. It is an invitation to teach a class in adventure journalism at the Mouseford Academy. Thea is honored and thrilled to teach at the school she attended as a young mouseling.

As anyone knows, the only way to get to the exclusive school is by sea. Thea has her own sailboat, so she packs up and sails off. She is shocked when a hydroplane almost runs right into her boat. When she reaches the dock, she meets the captain and isn't shy about giving him a piece of her mind. Five of the Mouseford students --- Nicky, Colette, Pamela, Paulina and Violet --- applaud her for it. She likes them immediately.

Thea meets her old headmaster, which makes her feel at home. But some things appear ominous. Strangely, a few of the other characters around the school seem familiar to Thea. And when she and her students wander into a storeroom by mistake, they find a huge carved statue --- and a very angry handymouse who suggests they shouldn't be peeking at what isn't their business. Not to mention that Thea has felt like some unseen person is watching her ever since she arrived. What in the world could be going on?

Luckily, readers have clues on many pages to help them solve the mystery. Since it's a Geronimo Stilton book, we also learn many snippets of interesting information about sailing, perfume, sealing wax, thunderstorms, secret codes, and much more.

Q: What could go wrong?

A: Plenty!

Geronimo's friends and family manage to make him even more anxious by telling him how much Benjamin admires him. THEA STILTON AND THE MOUNTAIN OF FIRE: Geronimo Stilton Special Edition
by Thea Stilton
Scholastic Paperbacks
ISBN: 9780545150606
Ages 7-10
160 pages

When Thea Stilton hears from "the Thea Sisters," she gets set to write down their story in this exciting adventure book. Nicky has received a call from her grandmother Naya, who happens to be an Australian Aborigine. Naya is upset because the sheep at the family ranch are sick, and no one can figure out what is wrong with them. Nicky knows that without the sheep's wool the family sells, her family will be in terrible financial trouble. She instantly begins packing to go home. Her fellow Thea Sisters --- Paulina, Violet, Pamela and Colette --- decide to support their friend and go with her.

When the group finally reaches the ranch (learning a lot about the "enormouse" country of Australia in the process), Naya leads them to the sick sheep, who are losing their wool in great clumps. Since the time for shearing (cutting off the wool) is less than a month away, Nicky knows she and the others have an urgent deadline to solve the mystery and save the family's ranch.

As the Thea Sisters chase down clues throughout the Australian outback, we also can gather the important clues that are highlighted in the book with a magnifying glass. As we ponder evidence such as the nervousness of the horse when she spots a crop plane, we also wonder who can solve the mystery faster: the Thea Sisters or the readers.

As with all Geronimo Stilton books, THEA STILTON AND THE MOUNTAIN OF FIRE is jam-packed with fascinating bits of information. As the mystery unravels, we learn about Australia's land and creatures, Australian Aborigine people, the unique characteristics of Australian ranches, Australia's history, an unusual flying emergency medical service, and much more. Readers also can play several clever games, such as mazes, making the reading experience enjoyably interactive.

But once there, Geronimo ends up discovering some hanky panky, and his nose for news gets the best of him.

At the golf tournament, Geronimo bumps into longtime friend Kornelius von Kickpaw, aka Special Agent OOK. He lets Geronimo in on his reason for being there. Some nefarious villain is trying to steal the Super Mouse Cup, so Geronimo teams up with Kornelius for the game he most enjoys --- solving crimes and getting a good scoop!
